The Top Signs Your PRV Is Failing

Old PRV no longer functioning and needs replacement.

Your PRV protects your entire plumbing system by regulating incoming water pressure. When it begins to fail, the symptoms can show up in several different ways. The most noticeable is changing pressure throughout the home. You may experience strong pressure in the morning and weak pressure later in the day. You may also feel pressure drop the moment another fixture is used.

Another common sign is pulsing or surging water. This happens when the PRV cannot maintain a steady flow. Faucets may sputter or pulse because the valve inside the PRV is sticking or partially blocked.

A dripping T and P valve on your water heater can also be a sign of a failing PRV. When pressure rises too high, the T and P valve relieves it by dripping water. If the heater itself is not the problem, the PRV is usually the cause.

A PRV that is older than seven to twelve years is likely nearing the end of its life. If you are experiencing fluctuating pressure or unusual plumbing noises, we can test your PRV and replace it if needed.
